The European Commission published the 2021 Blue Economy Report which summarises the key data from Eurostat and other sources from all blue economy sectors.
At the beginning of May, the European Commission proposed that Member States ease the current restrictions on non-essential travel into the EU to take into account the progress of vaccination and the changing epidemiological situation.

At the beginning of May, the European Commission updated the EU Industrial Strategy, first published in March 2020, to ensure that the circumstances following the COVID-19 crisis were taken into account.
On May 27 the Council published its conclusions on tourism in Europe until 2030. The document considers tourism as a cross-cutting economic and social activity with a wide-ranging impact on economic growth, employment and social and environmentally sustainable development.

The Spring 2021 Economic Forecast published on May 12 estimates that the EU economy will grow by 4.2% in 2021, while the euro area economy will expand by 4.3%.
In March 2018, the Trump Administration imposed duties of 10% and 25% on aluminium and steel imports into the United States from the EU. Consequently, the EU adopted rebalancing measures in reaction to the US tariffs that included recreational boats and products.

The European Standardisation Organisation (CEN) has developed a European standardisation deliverable for COVID-19 health and safety protocols in tourism services and establishments. This development comes after the European Commission took the initiative on the matter.
On Wednesday 19 May, EBI and its NGO partner The SeaCleaners (TSC) held a webinar titled “Harnessing the potential of recreational boating industry against marine litter”. Joining the event were Yvan Bourgnon, President and founder of The SeaCleaners, Andreea Strachinescu, Head of Unit at DG MARE, and Frédéric Silvert, Technical Director at TSC.
