The Irish Department of Transport has released the Code of Practice for the Safe Operation of Recreational Craft. This comprehensive resource provides safety advice, operational guidance, and legislative requirements for recreational craft operating in Irish coastal and inland waters.
The Code covers a wide range of craft, including sailing boats, rowing boats, kayaks, personal watercraft, motorboats, and stand-up paddleboards used for navigation. It features detailed safety checklists under the “Think and Prepare” approach, encouraging users to plan their trips, ensure proper training, and carry necessary safety equipment.
The Code includes legislative requirements, best practice guidelines for specific types of craft, and appendices addressing radiocommunications, weather, lifejacket guidance, and emergency procedures.
The Code of Practice is available free of charge in English and Irish and can be downloaded here.
